Is it just me...

Or does basil, when old, taste like licorice?
Has anyone else experienced/tasted this?! Today I got a salad where you can pick all these toppings they can put in. Well, I picked chopped up basil and it was not fresh b/c it tasted like licorice and made the whole salad taste like it as well! I should've just put in a Twizzler.
Anyways, I've noticed this before and asked other people... but I will now open forum it to you, blog world. Does someone know what I'm talkin about?

There's a cultivar of basil that has the same chemical in it that the anise plant does (which is what makes licorice taste like licorice) and the basil you had could have been a cross-bred plant! Then again, it could have just been old basil. :) I got a little google-happy, so my theory could be totally contrived and unrealistic, but I like that better than the idea of your eating non-fresh basil. :)

hmmm, interesting.

carrie, i have a request for you. as you know, march madness is upon us, and i've been talking with my canadian friends and the topic of school mascots came up. recalling my days from fourth grade with mrs. macentire learning about north carolina history, i was able to explain the significance of the UNC Chapel Hill Tar Heels. however, i lack the knowledge about your beloved Blue Devils. could you enlighten us with a blog or two about the origins/significance of the Duke Blue Devils? my canadian friends and i would appreciate it very much! :o)

If only I could get basil ANYWHERE in Romania I would be able to test it for you, because I would probably buy so much that it would certainly go bad before I could eat it all. And then I would know.
